This section documents past artwork. The actual work is generally physical not virtual, and the various images and videos shown here are necessarily of lesser quality and resolution. |
Chaotic Conductor (2004) This installation uses both high and low technology to explore the intersection of fine art, music, and chaos theory. A set of four coupled pendulums act as video eyes scanning canvases used as musical scores. A computer interprets the four video streams creating music.

GA2 Drawings (2002 and in progress) This series of drawings builds upon previous work by adding a reaction-diffusion system of virtual chemistry. This provides a substrate from which the macrostructure of the drawing emerges. The microstructure of the individual marks is based on genetic software as in the GA1 series.

The Traveling Salesman (work in progress - no links yet) This is a series of site specific wall paintings and objects based on the canonical optimization problem. The Traveling Salesman Problem is a search for the shortest path visiting a number of locations exactly once. Software solves this problem for a number of random points, and then transforms the result into an image which is visually aleatory and yet coherent. The theory behind this work can be found in the paper "What is Emergence?" in the "academia" secton of this website. |

GA1 Generative Animations (1996 - 1999) This series of generative sound and moving image works are intended for wall sized projection and high fidelity sound reproduction. They can be installed in galleries, clubs, and and other compatible spaces. Both picture and sound were created using GA1, a genetically based software environment created by the artist.

GA1 Lightbox Drawings (1998 - 1999) This series of large scale transparencies are very high resolution virtual drawings mounted in color corrected industrial lightboxes. They were created using GA1, a genetically based software environment created by the artist. GA1 is described in a paper that was presented at the Generative Art Conference in Milan Italy in 2000. That paper is available in the "academia" section of this web site.

Breeding Paintings (1996 - 1998) This series of digital prints is an experiment in using genetic algorithms to create and breed "paintings."

Generative Analog Videos (1993 - 1998) This series uses analog video feedback as a chaotic generative system to create materials intended for broadcast into living and working spaces via cable television. The TV is transformed into an electronic painting that moves and makes sound. Most of the audio portion is also created using generative techniques. These videos have been broadcast in New York City, Amsterdam, and other locations.
